The RFA Montenol was a Belgol-class tanker that was made in West Hartlepool, by William Gray & Company, in 1917. It was one of the three out of the ten tankers that had upright funnels and a single tall mast close by. The main mast was removed during World War II. It had about 64 men as complement. It was torpedoed on its way to Freetown on 21 May 1942 by the German submarine U-159; the next day, it was deliberately sunk by friendly fire from the HMS Woodruff.
